Founded by Jeff Martin in 2012 as a 501(c)(3), mPowering.org partnered with a charity working in Odisha (formerly Orissa), India to help improve lives in rural areas by introducing mobile technology as way to promote education while providing food, clothing and medicine each month.
In 2012, Tribal recognized that a larger impact on poverty and global social issues could be made as a private company rather than a charity; Tribal Brands and Tribal Technologies then developed mPowering Action. As a public-private partnership, mPowering Action brought together UN agencies including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Foundation (UNF), and the UN’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Its vision was to produce the largest mobile platform and analytical readout of what global youth cared about.
The mPowering Action platform incentivized youth to learn and engage through two popular mediums: entertainment and the mobile phone. mPowering Action offered young people everywhere exclusive content from globally recognized artists, as well as athletes and other celebrities, in exchange for a story or personal commitment to take action around global issues.
While no longer active, the mPowering Action platform formed the basis for Tribal Planet’s Citizen Platform. The Citizen Platform shares many of the same tenets and focuses on providing people of all ages with a breakthrough mobile, social, local and global platform dedicated to solving the most important issues challenging our world today.
mPowering Action was an important case study for Tribal Planet that demonstrated our success in public-private partnerships as well as bringing together the music, sports, and entertainment industries.
