AN innovative new harmonica has been launched today which promises to provide a more rounded sound and impress even the most experienced harp players.

Tribal Planet has launched the Spirit Harmonica, a cutting edge new instrument that has been designed in conjunction with 21st century Blues prophet and harmonica player Johnny Mars.

The Spirit harmonica is a complete redesign of the traditional harmonica but combines it’s modern approach with fantastic sound quality and an improvement on playability.

Features of the Spirit include:

  • A universal comb
  • Easy glide mouthpiece
  • Super comfort covers
  • Interchangeable reed plates
  • Easy view numbers for beginners
  • Customisable key selection
  • Non slip grip lines
  • Touch position system

The Spirit comes after Tribal Planet launched the Planetone range of Harmonicas last year.

The Planetone was well received by musicians and it sold out in just three weeks following its UK launch. The range is now available around the world.

The Spirit features a unique Universal Comb, a totally new concept which is designed to fit many manufacturers’ reed plates.

The enlarged reed chambers allow increased airflow meaning the musician can provide less effort for a great tune.

While the nickel plated brass reed plates are affixed to the universal comb with ten screws instead of three providing an air tight seal.

Meanwhile the phosphor bronze reeds give just the right mix of purity and grit to the sound.

The harmonica has been ergonomically designed to offer the ultimate in playing comfort. It includes smooth edges, contoured for easy glide action. Customisable key selection by the use of different colour covers.

With large easy view numbers the harmonica is suitable for beginners while the non slip grip lines provide control during performances under sweltering stage lighting.

The Spirit is being unveiled for the first time at the NAAM Show in Anaheim, where it is expected to be well received by musicians.

Director of international sales David Wright said: “We have been working on this cutting edge design for several years and believe it is the future for harmonicas.

“We proved with the Planetone range that there is a demand in the market for an improved harmonica and we have been delighted with the response that range has received.

“We are now bringing to the market a complete new take on the traditional harmonica which we believe will revolutionise the industry."

“The Spirit combines playability, looks and sound, but it also gives experienced harmonica players to opportunity to use alternative reed plates to customise their sound.”

Tribal Planet, headquartered in Birtley in the UK, is best known for its innovative gig bags, which are sold to musicians around the world.

David, a former senior staff member at Hohner set up Tribal Planet to bring design excellence to the music industry and to offer consumers a better choice. It soon revolutionised the guitar gig bag by offering bags with extra protection and versatility for all types of players.

The bags have been so successful that Tribal Planet is now among the first choice in gig bags across the world.

The firm branched out into harmonicas last year hoping to mirror the success. Tribal Planet launched the Planetone range in Spring 2007.

The range includes 21 harmonicas including Blues, Tremolo, Octave, and Chromatic, which makes a full presentation and competes with the traditional manufacturers in the market.

The Spirit Harmonica retails at £14.99 for the Standard and £19.99 for the Stage.
